The Goodyear Welted manufacturing process

The Goodyear Welted manufacturing process

Goodyear welted construction is the hallmark of artisanal shoemaking—renowned for its durability, precision, and timeless elegance. It ensures your boots are built to last, repairable, and exceptionally comfortable over time.

Goodyear Welted Construction: A Craft of Excellence

The Goodyear welted method is a traditional, labor-intensive process that reflects the highest standards of shoemaking.

More than 60 craftsmen are involved in the process of manufacturing one of our Goodyear shoes, and they use between 25 and 50 different elements and pieces. All this involves a process with more than 120 handcrafted phases, from beginning to end.

In 1872 Charles Goodyear invented a machine capable of stitching the welt to the insole, thus revolutionizing the quality of footwear worldwide. Due to its longstanding heritage, little needed maintenance, waterproof durability and clean aesthetic, Goodyear method is highly valued in the high-end shoe market.

Here's how it works and why it matters:

Step-by-step craftsmanship

  • Welt stitching: A leather strip (the welt) is stitched to both the upper and the insole, creating a strong foundation.
  • Outsole attachment: The outsole is then stitched to the welt—not directly to the upper—creating a layered, robust structure.
  • Cork filling: Between the insole and outsole, a cork layer is added. It molds to the wearer’s foot over time, offering personalized comfort.
  • Final finishing: The shoe is shaped, polished, and refined by hand, ensuring every detail meets premium standards.

Key benefits

  • Exceptional durability: The double stitching and layered construction make the shoes highly resistant to wear and tear.
  • Resoleable design: Because the sole is stitched to the welt, it can be replaced multiple times without damaging the upper.
  • Superior comfort: The cork mid-layer adapts to your foot’s shape, offering custom support and breathability.
  • Water resistance: The welt acts as a barrier, helping keep moisture out while maintaining flexibility.
  • Elegant structure: The method allows for precise shaping and long-lasting form, ideal for refined silhouettes.
